Q Genre Assignment - Essay or Video General guidelines for all modes of this assignment Choose a genre from one of the chapters in the textbook (it can be one we've discussed or one we haven't). Use the textbook for guidance, but also use outside research to bolster your analysis as necessary. Remember to cite all sources. You should describe the genre as a whole and talk about the societal function the genre seems to fulfill, as described in the text and/or elsewhere. For example, recall how the Belton explains how the femme fatale of film noir was a way to deal with the shifting role of women in society at the time. Once you've established the genre conventions and functions, closely describe your chosen films and explain why they fit into the genre and how (or whether) they address similar issues. Choose at least two films from the genre to analyze. You may choose a film toward the beginning of the genre's popularity and another toward the end to talk about the maturation or evolution of the genre. Alternately, you may choose a film that fits snugly into the genre and another that might not fall as obviously into the genre and discuss the differences. You may also talk about more than two films if you like. The grey boxes at the end of chapters are good guidelines. Option 1 Write a 750-1000 word essay analyzing at least two films from that genre. Option 2 Create a 7-10 ten minute video examining a particular aspect of the chosen genre or a small subset of films from the genre. Include a brief history, some relevant examples of the genre, and some explanation of how the genre interrelates with society in some ways. Successful videos will be more than simply people talking into the camera. A better approach might be to use slides and video clips or stills accompanied by voice-over. This is not to say you can't have people talking into the camera, just that the video should be more than that. Your essay should be in proper MLA format, with a descriptive title (not just "Final Essay," or "Musicals"), and each any outside sources should be properly cited.

Noir films are dark films, also known as "Black films." This genre of films deals with wartime and postwar despair of World War II how Americans adjusted to new political and social realities. Noir films pose a violation of the traditional narrative and thematic stylistic practices of classical Hollywood cinema. The narrative of these films is disturbing and uncomfortable for the audience. Dark lighting theme, rain, hardboiled male protagonist, and femme fatale are some of the characteristics of the noir films. The femme fatale and hardboiled detective in noir films are morally ambiguous characters, mostly portrayed as unreliable narrators. Noir films are usually a combination of narration and point-of-view stories.
